I’m looking for a cordless desktop with 30’ range that is very easy to use for the technically challenged. Bluetooth performance is pretty nice, but pairing can be such a pain in the ass, especially for technophobes.

  • excellent range (usually up to 30’)
  • good security
  • “pairing” is a pain for “unsophisticated user”
  • usually expensive (> $100 for bluetooth desktop)
• 2.4 GHz proprietary
  • intermediate range
  • easy to set up
• 27 MHz proprietary
  • short range (usually 6’ from receiver)
  • easy to set up
• Infrared
  • excellent range, but “line-of-sight” only
  • may need separate IR receiver

• Gyration
  • this looks like the best bet
  • 2.4 GHz proprietary up to 30’ range
  • have used this before with very good results
• Microsoft
  • either Bluetooth or 27 MHz, no other option
• Logitech
  • either Bluetooth or 27 MHz
• Kensington
  • PilotBoard series has 2.4 GHz proprietary
    • rated up to 30’
    • however, gets mixed reviews
    • mouse doesn’t always work
    • some keyboards have keys that stick
• Belkin
  • 27 MHz only
